Skiing on the

lunar plateau of Bure

Southern barrier of the massif, it stands as a fortress at first sight impregnable. Yet its summit attracts curiosity. A journey into another dimension with a science-fiction feel. Skiing on the Plateau de Bure is a unique experience, which requires a good practice of ski touring. But it’s worth it: a 360 degree view without any obstacle for miles is offered to the most courageous.

Deserve

the show

You will first have to reach one of the entrances to this fortress. From Le Dévoluy, there are two main options: via “la Fenêtre” accessible from the ski area, or via the combe Ratin. As you pass the ridge, the plateau is revealed, a great immaculate expanse.

You will also discover the IRAM observatory: twelve steel giants riveted on the universe. Wait a little and you will see them perform their synchronized dance. You then begin the crossing of this lunar plateau, in the direction of the peak. Up there, after a final effort, the long-awaited panorama awaits you.

A true balcony among the mountains, the Pic de Bure offers a view from the Verdon to the Vercors via the Écrins. It is the place where climbers, mountaineers, paragliders and gliders rub shoulders.

Keep an eye out for the passing golden eagle, which sometimes comes to give an aerobatic show to visitors. A unique natural space, preserved by its vertiginous walls. You go back down by the combe Ratin, very small in the middle of the limestone walls to finish your hike in the Bois Rond. You will have thus explored a diversity of exceptional landscapes.

The chourums

Real stone cathedral, the Dévoluy massif counts hundreds of underground vaults. They are the chourums. Several of them cross the mountain from one side to the other, letting the snow penetrate in winter, and opening a way to adventurous skiers. It is notably the case of the heroic crossing, on the slopes of the plateau of Bure.
